    Memo Shows No Transparency Over
    Illegal Immigration

Apparently the Obama administration wants to help only certain criminals, as long as votes are somehow attached.

This just burns my bacon. Apparently a draft memo from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services shows that the Obama administration is considering plans to stop deporting illegal immigrants. Too bad we can’t deport these pro-illegal immigrant politicians.

Here’s some of the skinny of the leaked 11-page memo, which can be read here
    USCI Memo
, that was let out of the bag by Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley, which got the illegal immigration foes howling again:

“… the Obama administration is considering using a back door to stop deporting many illegal immigrants — what a draft government memo said could be ‘a non-legislative version of amnesty,’” reported The Washington Times
    The Washington Times story
    .

“The memo outlined measures that the (USCIS) agency could take under existing laws to ‘reduce the threat of removal for certain individuals present in the United States without authorization,’ instead of waiting for Congress to pass an immigration overhaul to give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants,” reported The New York Times
    New York Times story
    .

And here’s something from the memo itself:

“Individuals in TPS (Temporary Protected Status)continue to be deemed ineligible to adjust or change status in the U.S. based on legal opinions rendered in the early 1990s by a General Counsel of the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Given the current definition of ‘admission’ in section 10 I (0)( 13)(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (‘the Act’), 8 U.S.C. § 110l(aX 13){A), the USCIS Chief Council (Roxana Bacon) has expressed her view that these legal opinions no longer reflect a correct interpretation of the statute. … Thus, USCIS should no longer adhere to the 1990 General Counsel opinions, and instead permit individuals in TPS to adjust or change status. …”

This certainly gives some heavy credence to the many Republicans rightly screaming bloody murder that the Obama administration is trying to bypass Congress. And many Democrats would be upset about this breach of political etiquette if this happened three years ago and it was the Bush administration trying to sneak one pass Congress. And speaking of former President Bush, he wanted to give illegal immigrants a little amnesty too. And that’s a bad thing.

Obama administration officials have gone on damage control and Chris Bentley, a USCIS spokesman, said that “nobody should mistake deliberation and exchange of ideas for final decisions.”

However, discussing any ideas that are “non-legislative version of amnesty” are ideas that should be presented to the public.

So much for that famed transparency that was promised to us.

    Hi J.C.,

True, I don't really hang out with illegal immigrants a lot, but then again, I don't hang out with drug dealers either, but I want them behind bars for breaking the law.

Sure, a different breed of criminal, but a criminal still the same.

Anyway, I've seen people work hard to stay in this country legally and work to get their visas and green cards. Their hard work should mean something. Giving illegal immigrants a free p**** is an insult to those who worked hard to stay here the legal way.

Also, the president shouldn't be byp****ing Congress at all. How would you feel if Bush did it? As far as health care reform, well, the majority of Americans didn't want it and that wasn't exactly created by promised transparency either.

But on a different topic, I'm looking forward to your new blog post tomorrow. I enjoyed the Twitter video today!

I have to disagree with you a bit here again. Amnesty for "illegal immigrants" wouldn't be a bad thing at all. It would give them some nice protections under the law and allow them to enter the system in a way that they could eventually become productive members of society, IMHO. Right now, they're caught in a "no man's land" of sorts.

As for Obama bypassing congress, he should have done that a year ago. The only thing that the stupid Republican congress seems to have wanted to do so far during Obama's presidency is to stalemate him (think health care reform).

Also, I'm still not sure why so many people a(yourself included) are so worried about the whole illegal immigration question. Compared to Iraq, their effect on our budget and economy is negligible. Also, I would bet 20$ that you have little or no interaction with any illegal immigrants on more than a passing level.
