    Obama’s Immigration Reform Speech Meaningless

Here's my rant about President Obama's immigration reform speech.
    But the column's better!

While everyone is wetting themselves with excitement over President Obama’s speech today regarding immigration reform, he didn’t really say anything.

    CNN
    CNN story
    , FOX News
    FOX News story
    , and The Associated Press
    The Associated Press story
reported nothing really earth shattering in the president’s speech. He didn’t call for a massive crack-down on illegal immigrants, he didn’t call for full amnesty for those who snuck into the U.S., heck, he didn’t even so much as say he’s going to boycott Taco Bell.

He did repeat a lot of the things that have been said before, such as employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants will face the law and illegal immigrants should pay for their crimes before becoming citizens.

President Obama has been critical of the famous Arizona law that makes it illegal to be, well, an illegal immigrant, but in his speech today he said that the government should be responsible for securing the border. But if the government was responsible for properly protecting the border than Arizona wouldn’t have needed that law, right?

But instead of giving the American people any real battle plan on tackling this issue, the president said he was ready to move forward with an ambiguous immigration reform.

“The question now is whether we will have the courage and the political will to pass a bill through Congress, to finally get it done. I’m ready to move forward, the majority of Democrats are ready to move forward and I believe the majority of Americans are ready to move forward. But the fact is that without bipartisan support, as we had just a few years ago, we cannot solve this problem,” President Obama said, according to the AP.

Sure the president can solve this problem, but no one wants to do what needs to be done. No one wants to round up the illegal immigrants, arrest them and ship them back to their home countries. Instead, many Democrats and Republicans want to give them amnesty and make them pay fines, back taxes, and let them do community service to make up for committing their crime.

It’s nice to know that illegally crossing the border and living in the U.S. is not a serious crime anymore and the only penalty is a slap on the wrist. And it’s a slap in the face to the immigrants who come to this country legally.

But don’t worry about immigration reform anytime soon. Remember how the government dragged its feet with health care reform and how the president kept pushing back his own deadlines for it? Well, the same will be true with immigration reform. Why?

Because if it’s one thing Democrats and Republicans can agree on and that’s votes. And with the control for Congress is up for grabs, Republicans and Democrats aren’t stupid enough to start debating about one of the most controversial issues facing the country right now if it means losing their votes.

Isn’t it nice that our political leaders have their priorities in order?
