Should Cindy McCain Keep Mouth Shut On DADT?

Thanksgiving is going to be so interesting and entertaining at the McCain household after the Republican senator’s wife appeared in an ad criticizing the government’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Appearing in an ad from gay-rights group NOH8, created in response to California’s Proposition 8 that banned same-sex marriage, Cindy McCain suggests that her own husband is part of the problem.

“Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future. They can’t serve our country openly. … Our government treats the LGBT community like second class citizens — why shouldn’t they?” Cindy McCain said in the ad that included other celebrities like Gene Simmons and Denise Richards, reported The Huffington Post.

Of course her husband, John McCain, filibustered a defense appropriations bill that would have repealed the U.S. military’s DADT policy back in September.

And the 2008 presidential candidate won’t find any support from his daughter, political columnist Meghan McCain, because she too does not support DADT.

But maybe John McCain should listen to his wife on this one. Americans, either gay or straight, who wants to serve our country proudly and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the U.S. of A. should at the very least be able to be open to who they are without the government creating problems or repercussions.

The DADT is an archaic policy that needs to be repealed. For the most part, our society is becoming more accepting of gays. Granted, we have a long ways to go, but great strides have been made in recent years.

And some Republican leaders, especially white-haired ones from Arizona, should reconsider this policy and honestly ask themselves if DADT would be the final nail to this great nation.

Because somehow having the stereotypical limped-wristed, lisp-speaking gay Marine who has about five -dozen ears from the enemy neatly embroidered on a throw pillow is not going to be the end of the United States.

I think that the issue is a complex one, something that you also hinted at in your post. On the one hand, I know that the military leaders don't want to allow gays in because they're afraid that it will affect unit cohesion. On the other hand, the military needs all of the recruits that they can get at this point. Not being either gay or in the military, I really don't have a dog in this fight.
